2018 ATSE NATIONAL TECHNOLOGY CHALLENGES DIALOGUE
ATLAS Deputy Manager Sam Davis from Ford Asia Pacific presented at the 2018 Academy of Technology Science and Engineering National Technology Challenges Dialogue at Wednesday 9 May 2018.
THE VISION FOR URBAN TRANSPORT¹ IN 2030
By 2030, implementation of a national connected and integrated transport system ensures a reduction in the time wasted in transit, and lower transport costs despite population increase. Australia has met and surpassed its emissions reduction target of 26-28 per cent².
Road deaths and injuries have decreased by 50-75 per cent on 2018 levels³. Effective transport planning has led to a decrease in the prevalence of diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and respiratory diseases due to a shift towards active transport, and reduced pollution4.
INDUSTRY TECHNOLOGY READINESS PROJECT
The Australian Academy of Technology and Engineering (ATSE) is embarking on a major three-year research project to examine the readiness of Australian industry to develop, adapt or adopt new and emerging technologies, with a horizon out to 2030.
The first year of the project will focus on the transport industry. Transport affects all sectors of the Australian economy and facilitates or impedes productivity and lifestyle improvements. The project will examine the readiness of the transport sector to use new and emerging transport technologies to address key 2030 challenges (Figure 1), including:
- Climate change and emissions;
- productivity, including congestion and efficiency; and
- health and wellbeing.
Transport stakeholders include individuals and organisations that: - Develop, adopt, or adapt transport technologies or transport policy;
- conduct research on mobility;
- heavily use transport infrastructure; or
- employ people in the transport sector.
1 The project focuses on urban transport for both people and freight, in the context of Australia’s broader domestic market and international markets.
