MULTI MATERIAL JOINING USING 3D PRINTED MICRO-PINS

To enable high strength joining solutions for lightweight mixed material joints where traditional methods of welding and riveting cannot be applied.

Additive manufacturing provides the opportunity to join dissimilar materials, in particular carbon fibre with metal in a way which has the potential to minimize damage to the composite material, eliminate adhesive bonding & fasteners and save weight. As composite material design solutions become more prevalent, it will be necessary to solve the challenges in joining to other materials.

Technical Case

The joining of metal-to-carbon fibre composite components using the conventional methods of adhesive bonding and mechanical fastening is time-consuming, expensive and structurally inefficient.
This project will develop an innovation joining technique using high-strength pins which eliminates the need for hole drilling and fasteners
